Dump trucks are extremely useful for transporting a lot of loose material at once. However, they are also extremely large and unwieldy. A distracted or inexperienced operator may have a lot of difficulty controlling a dump truck. Luckily, these tips from Fyda Freightliner can help you operate your dump truck more safely and more efficiently.

On the Road

As with any vehicle, the key to safely operating a dump truck is to pay attention at all times. The operator should monitor their speed and bear in mind that a heavier vehicle requires more time/distance to stop. One problem that plagues many dump truck operators is difficulty seeing behind the vehicle. If you plan to back up your dump truck, we highly recommend having someone stand to the side and give directions. Pull back slowly and pay attention to your guide’s instructions.

Another key factor to keep in mind is your dump truck’s height clearance. Certain areas, such as tunnels and bridges may be height restricted, meaning that vehicles above a certain height clearance cannot pass. If you fail to observe these warnings, damage to both the operator and the vehicle itself is the most likely result, so pay attention to the nearby infrastructure.

Loading Materials

Loading materials into your dump truck requires more forethought than you might expect. Allowing the upper portion of your dump box to become overfilled will interfere with the truck’s center of gravity. This, in turn, will put you in danger of potentially tipping over. To avoid this, pack materials low and evenly, covering them with a tarp if needed.

Practice Safety

Always follow basic safety practices like not driving with your truck bed raised and sticking to flat, solid ground wherever possible. The dump truck’s operator should stay aware of nearby people and vehicles at all times. Communicate to your fellow workers using hand signs and headsets as needed.

Keep Your Truck In Good Shape

Take care of your equipment, and it will take care of you. Regular maintenance will help a dump truck to operate effectively and minimize the risk of accidents caused by mechanical failure. Be sure to keep up with oil changes, tire pressure check, and other basic maintenance tasks. Never attempt to operate a dump truck in need of repairs.
